WHY THE STEREOTYPES?!

Oh yes, you see it.

As far as 1993, does Power Ranges contribute to media stereotyping?? (in this case racial stereotyping through media)

Just look at it, the the asian girl in yellow, the irish in green, the african-american in black...

Is this merely coincidence or is it an act of Racial Stereotyping?

The media plays a LARGE role in all these stereotyping business. If you talk about the video :

Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People

you can clearly see how Hollywood stereotypes arabian people into vicious murderers eventho its the minority which practice this due to a certain reason.

Stereotypes. What other stereotypes are there??

Well, the media can do almost ANYTHING! and so far, the most common ones are :

Racial Stereotyping
Gender Stereotyping
Jewish Stereotyping
African Stereotyping

BUT! Not all stereotyping is bad. Some of them DEMAND a certain expectation. Like for chinese people.

the Media stereotyped them in a way where all CHINESE people LOVE math and ROCK at it. When in reality, they're just like us and they have the choice whether to like it or not.

Other Stereotypes include:

Dumb Blondes,
Bitchy Cheerleaders
Evil Step Parents
Lazy fat people
Drunk Indians
Monstrous Mother in-laws
Brutal Russians
Suicidal Emo
and a hell lot more.

here's a link of examples :

and so i leave you with a video from a stand up comedian and a professor :

IS STEREOTYPING REALLY NECESSARY??

  1. You had posted some useful examples, Ian. I have never thought of Power Rangers as stereotype characters. Now I'm seeing them in a new light. I guess Asians wearing yellow is perhaps because yellow is usually use by the royals for Asians.

  2. But it is not confirmed that the colours where actual examples of Racial Stereotyping, so no assumptions will be made altho we could keep it in mind. And yellow was because of the Asian skin colour (the chinese and japanese, mostly).

  3. I agree on what you said about the colours of the power rangers. Black doesn't always means black people. Yellow doesn't always means asian. Talking about asian, they aren't always must be smart and can get a 100% for maths test. agree?

  4. The power rangers is peoples assumptions. Its whether we want to believe or not because there is no firm confirmation. And thats exactly what im saying, the chinese are always expected to score a perfect in any exams because of the media which stereotyped them to be geniuses but in reality, some are lazy, just like us. =D

  5. Oh? Is my example based on Racial Stereotype? I thought it is more to the culture and I'm not even referring to skin color here.

Either way, what Ian said is right. It doesn't necessarily has to be true about the stereotype.
