Whether we realize it or not, we have been implementing a lot of stereotypes in our daily life, all thanks to today's influential social media. In movies and television shows, stereotypes are used to give the sense of familiarity to the audience where they will quickly comprehend on what the characters of the movie or drama have gone through throughout the story. However, this only applies to those who actually have experienced it before hand. As such, stereotypes are a factor that attracts people into watching the said media. However, does it establish a good or bad influence to the audience?
Based on my experience, most movies that I have watched often have the following racial stereotypes:
-Black people are portrayed as hoodlums, lowly populace and troublemakers.
-Arabs are portrayed as terrorists.
-Asians are commonly presented as having squint eyes and skinny body. In terms of characteristics, they are depicted as humble and well-disciplined but naive at the same time.
-White people are portrayed as having most of positive traits.
There are also gender stereotypes such as men with their masculinity and women with their feminine attributes. But this type of stereotypes does not cause as much risk as ethnic stereotypes as it is perceived as amusing rather than a bother.
As I review these stereotypes, most of them sounds a bit harsh. However, nowadays, a lot of people starts to accept it openly as time goes by.
A good site explaining the types of stereotypes: http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/issues/stereotyping/index.cfm
Agreed. The media has stereotyped various cultures/ethnicity/etc until we people feel pressured because of certain expectation a persons gotta achieve and/or fear because of what the world think.

ReplyDeleteGender stereotypes! Why of course, they always thought that men are always strong and masculine while women always be the ones who sits at home and be a slave to men.
